I love watching this show because it shows the population dominant, modern female perspective. Everything about this show is targeted towards females and the results are always determined by females. No strong men are allowed to proceed far into the show nor male voters able to have an impact on who goes home. It’s really a population dominant female fantasy of the kind males they like and not actually indicative of the personality traits the overwhelming majority of men have or find appealing in other men.
On one hand, as a male, it’s sad to see shows like this have so much impact in popular culture. It’s also sad that in a lot of ways it reflects the politics of the modern, free world. Now on the other hand a strong, smart man can uncover a lot of interesting tidbits in a show like this. Things he could use to understand many of the current, large issues facing our species.
To delve just a bit further on why we see so many of Love Islands qualities throughout media (TV, Movies, etc.) almost exclusively has to do with corrupt big business and their desire to target advertisements. They know who’s responsible for buying their products and know just how to manipulate them. The male audience is worth almost nothing to big business and if one were to research the gap every advertiser pays for particular demographics they would find a dollar amount many,many,many times that received for the common strong male.
If I were to speculate on the percentage of males who watch and enjoy this, I would say it likely would be less than 15%. I also would lay out the demographics of those who vote in the many polls of the show as followed. 65-70% female/ 15-20% gay male/ 5-10% weak male/ 5-13% strong or young male who is unaware their vote holds no weight in the final tally.
With everything said it’s easier to understand why producers of Love Island are so manipulative with the results of who goes home. Last week was a very good example of how they do it. Who the voting audience wanted to be in a couple the most wound up determining the rankings with last place going home. I have never seen this question asked on any Love Island season of any countries version. I’m certain producers do many different questions and polls followed by cherry picking the one whose results they know their advertisers preferred demographic most like. It’s why you always see them slip in a different question,poll, or method than the dominant one they usually use at certain points in any Love Island season to determine who’s eliminated. This all but guarantees who they want goes through. As an extra layer of protection they are well aware of who cast mates like the least and are likely to send home before they ever step up to decide on camera, which is well documented.
Finally their is a reason why everything from politics to media has gotten far more divisive and most would say worse in this last decade or so which is more significant than anything said above. Which is governments allowance of big businesses to gather so much data about us through the internet. Everyone of us have turned into numbers in a spreadsheet which billionaires exploit. It’s gotten to easy for them to target the minds they know they can manipulate. In the past they had to speculate on how to reach the vulnerable. Many billionaires didn’t think the speculating and experimenting was worth the time and effort. The ones who succeeded guarded their secrets and data and as a result made more money. The ones who failed fell back on a tried and true method of accepting second best and still got rich. Instead of targeting the vulnerable the second best would simply try to make something worthwile which appealed to the overwhelming majority. For most of the rich there is no need to offer something worthwhile anymore because they can get more from 1 vulnerable person than 100 common people. They have the data and the methods on exactly how to reach that one individual.
The next major fight in our species is to protect an individuals data from big businesses, otherwise they will continue to promote the interests of the few morally flawed and shift young minds in damaging directions.
